Summer’s Calling ☀️
Can you feel it? The water at Bronte is warming up, the Clovelly ocean pool is filling with early-morning swimmers, and the countdown to the holidays has well and truly begun. Before the calendar fills with long lunches and lazy beach days, we’ve pulled together a few things to help you head into summer smiling – from making the most of your health fund before it resets, to keeping your lips sun-safe, to enjoying every bite of Christmas without a dental emergency on Boxing Day.
💙 Bronte Smile Plus: Use Your Health Fund Before It Resets
Here’s a little end-of-year secret: if you have extras cover, there’s a good chance you’ve already paid for dental care you haven’t used yet. For most health funds, annual extras limits reset on 31 December – and any unused benefits simply disappear. They don’t roll over, and they don’t come back.
That could mean a check-up and clean, a fresh set of X-rays, or that filling you’ve been meaning to get to – covered or heavily subsidised, if you book in before the year ends. Not sure where your limits sit? Your health fund app or a quick call to your fund will tell you, and our friendly front desk team is always happy to help you work it out.
A gentle nudge: every year, mid-to-late November and December become our busiest weeks, as everyone remembers their benefits at once. With some of our team also taking well-earned leave over the coming weeks, appointments – especially with your preferred dentist – will go quickly. Booking now means you get the time that suits you, rather than whatever’s left.
And if you know someone who’s sitting on unused benefits too, pass this on – they’ll thank you for it.

🌊 Happy Holidays – and Stay Sun Smart
From all of us at Wellness Dental Bronte, thank you for another wonderful year of trusting us with your smile. We hope your break is filled with salty swims, sandy toes and plenty of time with the people you love most.
Living by some of the most beautiful beaches in the world comes with one important responsibility: looking after our skin. And there’s one spot almost everyone forgets – your lips.
Your lips have very little natural protection from UV, and research from the University of Western Australia found you’re around 12 times more likely to develop cancer on your lower lip than your upper one.
Your ears are another commonly missed area – they catch the sun all day and rarely get a dab of sunscreen.
A few simple habits make a real difference:
- Swap your lip balm for an SPF 50+ version and keep it in your beach bag, car and handbag.
- Reapply every two hours – and after swimming, towelling off or eating.
- Don’t forget your ears – add an extra dab of sunscreen every time you do your face.
- Cover up with a broad-brimmed hat, sunglasses and shade, especially in the middle of the day.
Did you know your regular check-up includes an oral cancer screening? Our dentists look closely at your lips, gums, tongue and the soft tissues of your mouth for any changes. If you notice a sore, patch or lump on your lip or in your mouth that hasn’t healed within two weeks, please don’t wait – give us a call and we’ll take a look.

🎄 Christmas Party Food Survival Guide for Your Teeth
The pavlova, the prawns, the pudding, the cheese board that somehow never ends… Christmas is a season for indulging, and we’re absolutely not here to stop you! We just want your teeth to make it through to the new year in one piece. Here’s our cheeky “if you eat this, do this” guide:
🍮 If you eat sticky Christmas pudding, fruit cake or toffee…
Have a big glass of water straight after to help rinse away the sticky residue that clings between teeth. If you have crowns, bridges or braces, go gently – toffee and caramel love to pull things loose.
🥜 If you’re cracking nuts or crunching candy canes…
Let the nutcracker do the work, not your molars. Hard foods are one of the most common causes of cracked and chipped teeth over the holidays. Suck candy canes rather than biting down on them.
🥂 If you’re enjoying bubbles, wine or a summery cocktail…
Alternate with water, and wait around 30-60 minutes before brushing – brushing straight after acidic drinks can wear away softened enamel. Red wine fan? Sipping water between glasses helps reduce staining too.
🍖 If you’re tackling the pork crackling…
Go slow, chew carefully and avoid crunching down on the hardest pieces. Crackling is a sneaky culprit for chipped teeth and broken fillings.
🧀 If you’re finishing on the cheese board…
Good news – cheese is a tooth-friendly way to end a meal. It helps neutralise acid in your mouth, making it the perfect dessert chaser.
🍾 If you’re tempted to open a bottle with your teeth…
Please don’t! Teeth are for smiling and chewing – not opening bottles, tearing packaging or cracking crab shells.
And if the worst does happen over the break, give us a call – we’ll let you know our holiday hours and how to reach us for urgent care.
