Small Habits, Healthy Smiles

August brings Dental Health Week, the back half of the school holidays winding down, and a timely reminder that good oral health is built from small, everyday habits rather than big once-a-year efforts.

This month we’re shining a light on a national campaign close to our hearts, answering a question we get asked often, and helping you pack a lunchbox your dentist will love.

🦷 It’s Dental Health Week — And This Year It’s All About Young Adults

young-woman-laughing-candid-sqDental Health Week runs from 3-9 August. This year the Australian Dental Association’s “My Smile” campaign is putting the spotlight on 18-25 year olds.

It’s a stage of life packed with change — moving out, studying, starting a new job, learning to budget and juggling a first taste of independence. Something usually has to give, and for a lot of young adults, it’s their oral health. Regular check-ups get pushed back again and again, often until a small issue has become a much bigger — and more expensive — one.

Gen Z also tends to source health information differently, often turning to social media and influencers before a qualified professional. That’s exactly why this campaign matters: reliable information and good early habits, paired with seeing a dentist before small problems escalate, make all the difference long term.

If you’re in this age bracket — or you know someone who is — Dental Health Week is the perfect nudge to get back in the chair.

😁 What Are Retainers, and Why Do You Actually Need Them?

It’s one of the questions we hear most after a patient finishes Invisalign or braces: “Do I really still need to wear my retainer?” The short answer is yes — and here’s why.

Teeth are held in position by the surrounding bone and gum tissue, which take time to fully settle into their new positions after orthodontic treatment. Without a retainer, teeth can gradually drift back toward where they started — sometimes within just a few months of stopping. A retainer holds everything exactly where your orthodontist worked hard to move it, protecting your investment in your smile.

And on that note — our Dental Pods are back in stock! These clever little cleaning devices use ultrasonic technology to thoroughly clean retainers, mouthguards, nightguards, aligners and whitening trays in minutes, without the soaking, scrubbing or lingering odours. They’ve been one of our most requested items, and at $149, they’re a simple way to keep your gear properly clean and lasting longer.

🥪 Back to School: Lunchbox Ideas Your Dentist Will Approve Of

With the second half of term underway, it’s a good time to take a fresh look at what’s going in the lunchbox. Hidden sugars and processed snacks are often the biggest culprits behind tooth decay in kids — and they’re not always where you’d expect.

A few simple swaps can make a real difference:

  • Swap muesli bars and fruit straps for fresh fruit, cheese cubes or plain yoghurt
  • Choose plain crackers, rice cakes or vegetable sticks over flavoured chips
  • Stick to water in the drink bottle rather than juice or flavoured milk
  • Watch out for “healthy-looking” packaged snacks — many are loaded with added sugar

Little changes like these help reduce the number of “sugar attacks” on growing teeth throughout the day, without making lunchboxes boring. If it’s been a while since your child’s last check-up, the tail end of the school holidays is a great time to get it ticked off.
