Dental Veneers at Wellness Dental Bronte

Veneers are a great option for someone who wants to change the way their smile looks. Do you want your teeth to be whiter? Straighter? More natural looking?

If your smile has ever stopped you from doing something (like smiling in social settings) or it brings down your confidence, then dental veneers are an excellent choice to enhance its appearance. Veneers are not a restorative treatment that we use to fix decay or missing teeth. Rather, they serve a strictly aesthetic benefit.

What are Veneers?

Three woman standing on the beachA veneer is a thin layer of resin or porcelain that fits over the front of the tooth in question. Generally, we use them in sets to cover several teeth in your smile zone. For some people it might only be six veneers, while another individual with a wider smile could need 10.

They are effective at reducing the appearance of teeth with:

  • Small gaps
  • Crowding
  • Uneven or misshaped enamel
  • Dark stains and discoloration
  • Sizing issues

Each veneer is carefully crafted to fit alongside its neighbours to reflect a straight, proportionate, white smile.

Types of Dental Veneers

Our office uses two types of veneers, depending on the needs of our patients.

  • Porcelain — For optimal aesthetics, porcelain veneers can be crafted by our lab in Australia and placed over a period of two visits. The ceramics that are used best reflect that of natural tooth enamel. At the first visit we’ll buff the tooth to ensure a proper fit, then take a scan or mould to craft the permanent restorations. In the meantime, you’ll have a set of temporary veneers to wear while the permanent ones are being designed. After a short time, you’ll come back to have the porcelain fronts bonded in place for a new, refreshed smile.
  • Resin Composite — When time is of the essence, we can use material that’s like what a white filling is made of, to change the shape and colour of your tooth. The process only takes one appointment and is more affordable than traditional veneers. However, it’s not as strong or durable, meaning it can chip a bit more easily. But composite veneers may be ideal for situations where only one or two problematic teeth need to be addressed.

Care and Maintenance

It’s paramount to maintain healthy teeth and gums by brushing twice daily and flossing around your veneers each day. Flossing won’t pull off a bonded veneer. If anything, not cleaning well around them can cause your gums to become inflamed, which then leads to more bacteria that can threaten the bonding agent between your veneer and tooth. Schedule regular checkups to have your teeth cleaned and evaluated for any problems.

We recommend that all of our cosmetic dentistry patients invest in a protective night guard to prevent any chipping in their veneers. If you grind or clench your teeth at night, it’s one of the biggest factors that causes problems with veneers and other dental work.
